Sublots to get you excited for the Bears season: The Bears might be good

Published by Erick Ward at 11:20 am under Chicago Bears, NFL Edit This

I was only able to add two subplots, because I was busy and because the Cubs struggles took away some of my energy, but it’s a good thing I didn’t waste any more of my time. Usually, I wait a little while before I get overly excited about anything, but the Bears looked pretty good yesterday.

Peyton Manning was playing for the first time in a long time, with a beyond huge knee brace, but the Bears forced him to struggle. When the Colts were successful, running quick slants and outs, the Bears tackled well and kept the gains to a minimum.  The Bears’ tackling last season, when they played especially bad, and during the preseason, was the most alarming thing. And it made a lot of people wonder why they didn’t tackle a little bit more in training camp.

It’s only one game, but they did their job last night.

And what is there to say about Matt Forte. He looked like a real NFL running back. He made me think someone took over Jerry Angelo’s body in the second round of the last NFL Draft. If you eliminate his 50-yard TD run, he only averaged about 3.3 yards per carry.

But, he did so many things well. On a few occasions, he successfully helped John St. Clair with Dwight Freeney, he caught the ball out of the back field, and he rarely went down on first contact.

All in all, I think the Bears did more than enough things to get me excited for the rest of the season. Well, at least until next Sunday. I mean Kyle Orton is still the quarterback.
